On record, when the music establishes the illusion of the real itself

The soundtrack of a film is already creating a unit of time when the image has a space unit. We need to create a natural balance between the actors' voices and their sound environment in harmony with the image. During the shooting, what is watched in the image may not have been picked up by the HF microphones or the surround sound, so we must recreate them as if they had been picked up directly.

The quality of Matthieu Langlet's work, who is a member of the collective "La Puce à l'Oreille", is impressive, just by listening to the soundtrack, each element of the image is found in the ear, the slightest flutter of wings of bird, the change of environment feels as if we had the image right in front of our eyes, like a radio play.

Nathan Symes
Nathan Symes - image Cosmopolite Records®
But a film is also a soundtrack, this requires a talented composer who come to make a sound texture to the film and to relay a narrative rhythm and dynamic to the image. Already for "Partie de Poker" (Poker Hand)Espérance Pham Thai Lan and Nathan Symes enriched their respective creations with the song  Twist of Chapel Hill.
This time, Nathan has begun on lyrics written by Espérance for the song "Un joli conte" and composed music of it on the pictures of "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come). Then it's Matthew Langlet who associated the whole by mixing his fabulous hearing history and Nathan's rhythmic music.

But if you want to learn more about Nathan Symes, he confides in an interview during the Festival Strasbourg Chicago in 2012. However, this time, the collaboration for this short is with Nathan Symes a solo.

From now on we can say that Nathan Symes is for Espérance Pham Thai Lan which Ennio Morricone was for Sergio Leone: a real aesthetic communion where each keeps his world and reveals the universe of the other, in brief a true artistic communion made to last.

The post-production in the shadow and now in the light of the sunlights.

A short is a collection of synchronized pictures and sounds with opening and closing credits. To be successful, it doesn't exist a recipe (people would know about it) and everything becomes more complex for alchemy. Is it due to the script, the actors, technicians, producers, the part of the current climate? As a director, I start every time, without knowing the answer.

At first, I viewed the rushes of "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come), I kept the best of them in my opinion. They will form a puzzle assembled in an order increasing the standing of the work of all to tell a story according to my vision.
Arnaud Pottier and I, with the patience of a saint, made the final cutting.

Phase calibration comes right after that gives pictures of brightness, revealing a color over another, harmonized between them without trick, as for a beauty contest. I owe this conjuring trick by François Montpellier's talent whom I appeal regularly with happiness.
Who said short says music. "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come) is not the exception.

In one of my shorts and making off, I used one of the Nathan Symes's songs. His world is close to mine. This time, I really wanted he composed an original music for "Un joli conte" (A pretty tale) which I wrote the lyrics.
When Nathan made me listen to his composition, I was immediately excited and I listened to it several times without tiring. His musical composition is the icing on the cake to add to the recorded sounds and silences on the shooting.

However, we must carefully regulate the editing, the mixing, the music and the song. Matthieu Langlet was with me in charge of them. I had the opportunity to listen to his work, blindly, not seeing the pictures scrolled on the screen. I found myself suddenly dive into a specific atmosphere as if I was listening to the radio and the short took place in my head from the noise and dialogues. This was an excellent way to measure the quality of his work and the importance of sound in the short.

Soon we will have to organize the screening of "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come). Don't worry, be happy, La B.O. prepares for it at its own pace.

Which camera to shoot on 1 metre wide?

We must have a slight, handy movie camera, having to our disposal a wide range of objectives as to shoot on the 8th floor of a scaffold, it is important that the material is not  a source of wasted time and danger. And then to save time and to reduce problems of intercuts associated with editing when the background is so vast and the changing light, it is imperative to shoot with multi- cameras. However, the economic model of the short makes this luxury complex with cameras like RED appropriately sized but at prices that swallow all the available budget.

If the VariCam of Panasonic has fulfiled its role perfectly during the shooting of Poker hand" directed by Espérance Pham Thai Lan, it was this time to find a movie camera that combined many of the qualities that the Varicam did not have while allowing capture in HD quality with a quality sensor.

The alternative was the Canon bodies and this is what we chose.

Canon has fundamentally changed by picking up for the short and the feature with the family 5D 7D. For Tomboy by Céline Sciamma,  it is the director's best friend who wants to shoot closer to the actors in real settings.

Each of the bodies has its advantage but the 5D is perfect for still shots and close-ups while the 7D is more suited to camera movements. But if the ABC by picking up  with a Canon body tempts you, I hand over to Pascal Délé. Or, to go further, Pascal Montjovent could talk for ever about his experience as cinematographer with this type of equipment.

"Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come) to the red carpet in Cannes and in other towns...?

If the preparation of a feature reminds someone of a wedding, where everything must be organized prior to the feature, planed and timed down to the last second, the shooting moves away because the unexpected often happens without a warning.

The participants are suddenly swept in the middle of a whirl along, following in the unknown the ballet master(mistress) who is the director. Here on "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come), it is Espérance Pham Thai Lan who gets her artistic and technical teams mixed up, with the blessing of La B.O..

Espérance attends to give rhythm to the ceremony as time goes by, observing rituals like the present studio management at the first hour, which welcomes the technicians first with breakfast.

Once swallowed, often in a rush, each goes to work, the location is transformed in a flash into a film set: cables are lying around every place with projectors and cameras that are put up in strategic locations.
The director of photography masters light, the shadows, he plays with the composition. His assistant is squatting to plug in projectors. Nearby, one of his peers tests the microphone, making sounds fly and vanishing them in space while the continuity assistant chalks numbers of a sequence, of a plan on the clapper board...

The actors (Sylvain Charbonneau and Nathalie Mann) a little lucky, are invited later to the stage. As soon as they arrive, they are taken charge, they go for the make-up that makes their face look different even their body, then they have their hair done before puting on their costumes.

Sometimes accessories could be imposed, never mind, they appropriate them while reciting their text reluctantly. They end with exchanges with Espérance, gleaning information to improve their acting and make a final rehearsal, just to feel ready to plunge into the water without being able to succeed in deceiving the inevitable passage of waiting before being filmed.

The moment finally comes when everyone is ready and stands at his post, where everybody should be. An assistant director asks the silence that chases away all sounds so that one could hear a plastic cup blowing of.

Espérance's voice rises: "Roll camera!", those of Benoît and Clément followed closely with "Speed!", then Espérance calls out "Action!", this is the kick-off: the magic is triggered.

Nobody asks: "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come) to the red carpet in Cannes, Berlin, Venise, Sundance, New York, Los Angeles? No, no, no, we shoot and nothing else exists.
