Dans le titre de votre film, on s'attend plutôt à "Plus dur sera la chute", pourquoi avez-vous opté pour l'adjectif belle à la place de dur?

Je trouve intéressant d'utiliser des citations, des expressions usuelles, connues et de les transformer au profit des histoires que j'invente et le titre est une ouverture pour cet exercice. Belle suscite un plaisir visuel, esthétique ou auditif, belle peut souligner aussi quelque chose de remarquable par la grandeur. Quant à chute, elle signifie une action de tomber, une pente d'un toit ou la partie terminant un récit. Tout le film est basé sur le principe que les séquences ont un double, un triple sens voire plus et entraînent forcément les spectateurs sur des voies différentes.

Quel en est le synopsis ?
En deux phrases - Une rencontre improbable entre une femme déroutante et un ouvrier que tout oppose, du moins en apparence. Des morceaux de puzzle se mettent en place avec une fin surprenante, décelable à condition de relever les bons indices. -
   

Avez-vous, s'il y en a, pris des risques pour ce film ?

Oui : contrairement aux autres courts métrages, j'ai monté le film pour servir la narration comme une nouvelle, je n'ai pas voulu faire de prouesse technique comme on peut le constater par exemple dans "Partie de poker". J'ai travaillé avec une équipe exceptionnellement réduite à cause des décors (échafaudage et hôpital public) et j'ai dû être sur plusieurs fronts à la fois. Le paradoxe, j'ai très peu délégué mais j'ai laissé aux chefs des postes clefs sans aucun doute plus de liberté que d'habitude à condition qu'ils respectent le cahier des charges que j'ai imposé avec l'accord de LA B.O..

Vous avez écrit les paroles de la chanson "Un joli conte" qu'on entend au générique de fin. Comment réagissez-vous à l'enthousiasme qu'elle procure aux gens ?
La musique composée par Nathan Symes y est pour beaucoup. L'alliance entre ses notes et mes mots forme un ensemble qui colle parfaitement à l'esprit que je voulais donner au film. Lorsque nous sommes comparés à des grands artistes de renom comme Serge Gainsbourg, Benjamin Biolay, Tom Novembre, Arthur H, Alain Bashung, Paolo Conte ou lorsque la bande son évoque pour certains celles des films de Quentin Tarantino comme Pulp fiction, nous sommes à chaque fois très surpris, cela nous amuse beaucoup et nous plaît car ces artistes et ce réalisateur font partie de nos références.

Pourquoi évoquez-vous un chat dans la chanson ? Il n'y en a pas dans le film. Est-ce que c'est un symbole ou un indice ?
Cet animal était présent pendant toute une partie du tournage et sa discrétion a été exemplaire. Je lui ai rendu un petit hommage, c'était notre mascotte.

Pourquoi avoir réalisé "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come) ?

Ce film m'offre l'opportunité de jongler avec les genres, que ce soit celui de la comédie dramatique, du suspense et du thriller, en utilisant, par exemple, certaines phrases stéréotypées voire universelles, pourvues cependant de sens cachés, de non-dits. Comme un jeu, les spectateurs sont ainsi amenés à tisser leur propre interprétation sur les personnages et le déroulement de l'histoire, à partir de vrais ou faux indices d'où des débats animés qui sont prévisibles après les projections. J'avais envie que les spectateurs ne soient pas que des consommateurs mais qu'ils soient amenés à réfléchir à ce qu'ils ont vu et entendu.

Comment faites-vous pour avoir de l'inspiration ?

La vie en général en est ma principale source, les actualités par exemple, c'est un vivier de faits, de rebondissements, d'événements qui développent mon imagination, le travail de mes confrères stimule mon inventivité, je suis sensible à l'air du temps.

Quel est votre prochain objectif ?

Suivre jusqu'au bout le parcours de "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come), que ce film fasse son chemin le plus loin possible, qu'il soit diffusé, avec un peu de chance, à grande échelle, bref qu'il soit vu par le maximum de gens. Je n'ai pas envie qu'il reste dans un tiroir ni dans un coin.

Vous avez consacré du temps pour "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come). Est-ce que ce n'est pas trop dur à présent de devoir passer à autre chose ?

Non pas vraiment car je peux me consacrer à nouveau à mes projets qui sont à des stades différents, certains sont à l'état de genèse, je les ai dans la tête et il me reste à les "écrire", certains sont plus avancés, j'essaie de les faire connaître pour pouvoir les concrétiser et les tourner dans les meilleures conditions.

Qu'est-ce qui vous fait le plus avancer ?

L'envie d'écrire des scénarii puis de les réaliser au point que cela devienne vital pour moi.

Donnez-nous un mot que vous aimez ?

Actuellement, c'est "RESPECT".

In the title of your film, one rather expects "Plus dur sera la chute" (harder will be the fall) why did you chose the adjective beautiful instead of hard?

It's more interesting to use quotes, regular expressions, known and turn them to the benefit of the stories I invented and the title is an opening for this exercise. Beautiful incites attracting visual pleasure, aesthetic or auditory, beautiful can also highlight something remarkable for greatness. As for fall, it means an action of falling, a slope of a roof or part ending a story. The whole film is based on the principle that the sequences have a double, triple or even more meanings and inevitably lead the audience on different routes.

What is the synopsis ?
In two sentences- An improbable encounter between a disconcerting woman and a worker who are totally unalike, at least on the face of it. Puzzle pieces are set up with a surprising end, detectable conditionally to discover the right clues.-


Do you have, if any, taken risks for the film?

Yes: unlike other short films, I edited the film to serve the narration as a piece of news, I did not want to make technical prowess as can be seen for example in "Partie de poker" (Poker Hand). I worked with an exceptionally small team because the sets (scaffolding and public hospital) and I have been on several fronts. The paradox, I have very little delegated but I let the chiefs' key posts undoubtedly more freedom than usual provided so long they meet the specifications that I imposed with the agreement of LA B.O..

You wrote the lyrics of the song "Un joli conte" (A nice tale) that everybody listen to it in the end credits. How do you respond to the enthusiasm it brings to people?
Music by Nathan Symes has much to do. The alliance between his notes and my words form a whole that sticks perfectly to the mind that I wanted to give the film. When we compared the great renowned artists such as Serge Gainsbourg, Benjamin Biolay, Tom Novembre, Arthur H, Alain Bashung, Paolo Conte ou or when the soundtrack evokes for some those of the Quentin Tarantino's films like Pulp fiction, we are every time very surprised, we had a lot of fun and we like it because these artists and the director belong to our references.

Why do you mention a cat in the song? There are none in the film. Is it a symbol or a clue?

This animal was present during a part of the shooting and was a model of discretion. I paid a small tribute to it, it was our mascot.

Why have you directed "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come)?

This film gives me the opportunity to juggle with types (the drama, suspense and thriller) using, for example, certain stereotyped  or universal sentences, however equipped with hidden meanings unsaid. As a game, the audience are thus led to weave their own interpretation on the characters and the course of the story, from true or false clues of where lively debates are predictable after the screenings. I felt like the audience are not only consumers, but they are encouraged to think about what they saw and heard.

How do you get the inspiration? 
Life usually is my main source, news, for example, is made of a fishpond, actionpacked events that develop my imagination, the work of my colleagues stimulates my creativity, I am sensitive to the current climate.

What is your next objective? 
I want to follow through the path of "Plus belle sera la chute" (The most beautiful they come), this film makes its way as far as possible, be released, with a little luck, a large scale, in short it is seen by the most people. I do not feel like it keeps to itself, stays in a drawer.

You have devoted your time  to "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come). Is not too hard now have to move on?
Not really because I can devote myself to my new projects that are in various stages, some are in the state of origin, I have them in my head and it remains to write them, some are more advanced, I try to show them to be known in order to direct and shoot them in the best conditions.

What makes you the most forward? 
The desire to write screenplays and then direct them so much that it becomes vital for me.

Currently, it is "RESPECT".

Which camera to shoot on 1 metre wide?

We must have a slight, handy movie camera, having to our disposal a wide range of objectives as to shoot on the 8th floor of a scaffold, it is important that the material is not  a source of wasted time and danger. And then to save time and to reduce problems of intercuts associated with editing when the background is so vast and the changing light, it is imperative to shoot with multi- cameras. However, the economic model of the short makes this luxury complex with cameras like RED appropriately sized but at prices that swallow all the available budget.

If the VariCam of Panasonic has fulfiled its role perfectly during the shooting of Poker hand" directed by Espérance Pham Thai Lan, it was this time to find a movie camera that combined many of the qualities that the Varicam did not have while allowing capture in HD quality with a quality sensor.

The alternative was the Canon bodies and this is what we chose.

Canon has fundamentally changed by picking up for the short and the feature with the family 5D 7D. For Tomboy by Céline Sciamma,  it is the director's best friend who wants to shoot closer to the actors in real settings.

Each of the bodies has its advantage but the 5D is perfect for still shots and close-ups while the 7D is more suited to camera movements. But if the ABC by picking up  with a Canon body tempts you, I hand over to Pascal Délé. Or, to go further, Pascal Montjovent could talk for ever about his experience as cinematographer with this type of equipment.

The first reading with Sylvain Charbonneau and Nathalie Mann proved surprisingly instructive because it confirmed my choice of this duo who immediately worked perfectly: I realized that I was having the couple of "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come).

Sylvain has made his contribution to the character a relaxed style, an opened mind, opening up unembellished, for Nathalie, more reserved, she knew to show an emotion that is all on edge, with a lot of sensitivity.

With the passing rehearsals, they have proved to be outstanding playmates, joined soon after by Jean Lin with a sharp blue stare. From his arrival, one of the rehearsals neared surrealism, transforming him and Sylvain as protagonists of " Blade Runner" in life, a Philip K Dick with a European touch, one being in Paris and the other more than three hours from the capital: they play opposite them via computer screens, each portrayed his character and played cat and mouse.
