Sur le film "Quand le jour se lève" (When Day Breaks) le court métrage d'Espérance Pham Thái Lan, Dominique Lambert, chef monteur son, aidé par Frédéric Combes, bruiteur, ont utilisé les sons enregistrés pendant le tournage par Mathieu Chanon et les ont ensuite considérablement enrichis afin d'habiller l'univers sonore du film. Matthieu Langlet, le mixeur de "Plus belle sera la chute" et Espérance ont pu régler la bande son où les silences, les bruits, les ambiances et les voix sont en totale harmonie avec l'histoire, embellie par la musique composée par Eric Prados.

Par ailleurs, Béatrice Mizrahi, la chef opérateur a su capter avec la caméra ce qu'attendait Espérance.

Avec l'étalonneur Olivier Garcia de HD-Systems, ils ont tous les deux apporté un coup d'éclat remarquable au film : les couleurs sont ravivées, réchauffées, les contrastes ont gagné en netteté, les lumières choisies avec délicatesse respectent les volumes et le résultat final concorde avec bonheur au visuel imaginé par Espérance.

On the Espérance Pham Thái Lan's short "When Day Breaks" (Quand le jour se lève), Dominique Lambert, chief sound editor,  helped by Frédéric Combes, foley artist, used the recorded sounds during the shooting by Mathieu Chanon and then they have considerably enriched them in order to reinforce the sound world  of the film. Otherwise, Béatrice Mizrahi, the director of photography has captured with the camera that Espérance Pham Thái Lan expected.
With the grader Olivier Garcia from HD-Systems, they both brought remarkable glamour to it: the colors are revived, heated, contrasts gained sharpness, lights delicately chosen meet the volumes and the end result coincides felicitously with the imagined visual by Espérance.

La bande son d'un film, c'est déjà de créer une unité de temps quand l'image propose une unité d'espace. Il faut créer un équilibre naturel entre la voix des acteurs et leur environnement sonore à l'unisson de l'image.

Lors du tournage, ce qui se voit à l'image peut ne pas avoir été capté par les micro HF ou le son d'ambiance, il faut donc les recréer comme s'ils avaient été captés directement.

La qualité du travail de Matthieu Langlet, membre du collectif La Puce à l'Oreille, est impressionnante, uniquement à l'écoute de la bande son : chaque élément de l'image se retrouve à l'oreille, le moindre battement d'ailes d'oiseau, de changement d'environnement se ressent comme si on avait l'image sous les yeux, comme une pièce radiophonique.

Mais un film, c'est aussi une bande son, pour cela il faut un compositeur de talent qui vienne apporter une texture sonore au film et relayer un rythme et une dynamique narrative à l'image. Déjà pour Partie de Poker, Espérance Pham Thai Lan et Nathan Symes avaient enrichi leur créations respectives avec la chanson Twist de Chapel Hill.

Cette fois-ci, Nathan est parti de paroles écrites par Espérance pour la chanson "Un joli conte" et en a composé la musique sur les images de "Plus belle sera la chute". Ensuite c'est Matthieu Langlet qui a associé l'ensemble en mixant sa fabuleuse histoire auditive et la musique rythmée de Nathan.

Mais si vous voulez mieux connaître Nathan Symes, il se livre dans une interview lors du Festival Strasbourg Chicago en 2012. Cependant, cette fois-ci, la collaboration pour ce court métrage sera avec Nathan Symes en solo.


On peut désormais dire que Nathan Symes est pour Espérance Pham Thai Lan, ce que Ennio Morricone était pour Sergio Leone : une vraie communion esthétique où chacun garde son univers et révèle celui de l'autre, bref une communion artistique faite pour durer.

The quality of Matthieu Langlet's work, who is a member of the collective "La Puce à l'Oreille", is impressive, just by listening to the soundtrack, each element of the image is found in the ear, the slightest flutter of wings of bird, the change of environment feels as if we had the image right in front of our eyes, like a radio play.

But a film is also a soundtrack, this requires a talented composer who come to make a sound texture to the film and to relay a narrative rhythm and dynamic to the image. Already for "Partie de Poker" (Poker Hand),  Espérance Pham Thai Lan and Nathan Symes enriched their respective creations with the song  Twist of Chapel Hill.

This time, Nathan has begun on lyrics written by Espérance for the song "Un joli conte" and composed music of it on the pictures of "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come). Then it's Matthew Langlet who associated the whole by mixing his fabulous hearing history and Nathan's rhythmic music.

La post-production dans l'ombre et maintenant sous la lumière des projecteurs.

Un film, c'est un assemblage d'images et de sons synchronisés avec un générique de début et de fin. Pour qu'il soit réussi, il n'existe pas de recette (ça se saurait) et tout devient plus complexe pour obtenir une alchimie. Tient-elle au scénario, aux acteurs, aux techniciens, aux producteurs, à l'air du temps ?

En tant que réalisatrice, je me lance à chaque fois, sans en connaître la réponse.

Tout d'abord, j'ai visionné les rushes de "Plus belle sera la chute", d'après moi, j'en ai gardé les meilleures, elles vont former un puzzle assemblé dans un ordre valorisant le travail de tous afin de raconter une histoire selon ma vision.
Arnaud Pottier et moi avons fait le montage final avec une patience d'ange.
 

La phase de l'étalonnage arrive juste après, qui donne aux images de l'éclat, révélant une couleur plutôt qu'une autre, harmonisées entre elles sans artifice, comme pour un concours de beauté. Je dois ce tour de passe-passe au talent de François Montpellier que je sollicite régulièrement avec bonheur.

Qui dit film dit musique. "Plus belle sera la chute" ne fait pas exception.

Dans un de mes courts métrages et making off, j'ai utilisé une des chansons de Nathan Symes. Son univers est proche du mien. J'avais donc très envie qu'il compose cette fois-ci une musique originale sur "Un joli conte" dont j'ai écrit les paroles.

Lorsque Nathan m'a fait écouter sa composition, j'ai tout de suite été emballée et je l'ai écoutée plusieurs fois, sans m'en lasser. C'est la cerise sur le gâteau à ajouter aux sons et silences enregistrés sur le tournage.

Cependant il faut monter et mixer ces derniers sans oublier la musique, la chanson. Matthieu Langlet s'en est chargé avec moi. J'ai eu l'occasion d'écouter son travail, à l'aveugle, sans voir les images défilées sur l'écran. Je me suis retrouvée plongée soudain dans une ambiance spécifique comme si j'écoutais la radio et le film s'est déroulé dans ma tête à partir des bruits et des dialogues. C'est un excellent moyen de mesurer la qualité de son travail et l'importance du son dans le film.

Il va falloir bientôt songer à organiser le projection de "Plus belle sera la chute". N'ayez aucune inquiétude, soyez heureux, La B.O. s'y prépare à son rythme.

To be successful, it doesn't exist a recipe (people would know about it) and everything becomes more complex for alchemy. Is it due to the script, the actors, technicians, producers, the part of the current climate? As a director, I start every time, without knowing the answer.

At first, I viewed the rushes of "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come), I kept the best of them in my opinion. They will form a puzzle assembled in an order increasing the standing of the work of all to tell a story according to my vision.

Phase calibration comes right after that gives pictures of brightness, revealing a color over another, harmonized between them without trick, as for a beauty contest. I owe this conjuring trick by François Montpellier's talent whom I appeal regularly with happiness.

In one of my shorts and making off, I used one of the Nathan Symes's songs. His world is close to mine. This time, I really wanted he composed an original music for "Un joli conte" (A pretty tale) which I wrote the lyrics.
When Nathan made ​​me listen to his composition, I was immediately excited and I listened to it several times without tiring. His musical composition is the icing on the cake to add to the recorded sounds and silences on the shooting.

However, we must carefully regulate the editing, the mixing, the music and the song. Matthieu Langlet was with me in charge of them. I had the opportunity to listen to his work, blindly, not seeing the pictures scrolled on the screen. I found myself suddenly dive into a specific atmosphere as if I was listening to the radio and the short took place in my head from the noise and dialogues. This was an excellent way to measure the quality of his work and the importance of sound in the short.

Soon we will have to organize the screening of "Plus belle sera la chute" (The more beautiful they come). Don't worry, be happy, La B.O. prepares for it at its own pace.
